The Chief of Schools for Secondary Education, along with the Chief of School Operations, oversee the operations of Madison's middle and high schools and competitive WIAA sanctioned athletics. The district has 12 middle schools ranging in size from 255 to 740 students. MMSD middle schools contain grades 6-8 and are committed to a middle school philosophy that promotes vigorous academic attainment while recognizing the important developmental stages of this age group. The district has five high schools and one alternative high school.
The mission of the office is the development and support of school leaders who can promote high quality instruction, rigorous and relevant curriculum, and inclusive and caring schools. The work of this office is driven by the district strategic plan and the policies and priorities of the Board of Education.
This mission is accomplished by using meaningful and thorough data to analyze program effectiveness and student outcomes, by providing professional development and support to principals and assistant principals, and by continually improving district wide consistency and articulation.
District athletics are overseen by four district athletic directors who are responsible for the day to day operations. The Chief of Secondary Schools meets with the directors on a monthly basis to discuss policies and budget concerns.
